where in downtown/mid town miami is the new flexbaths going to be??? I think I read on here its going to be around 26th street and 5th avenue, is that right??

After a year of not going to the baths, I visited Club Acqua located in the former CBC facilities. Besides new staff, there has been some redecorating but the basic layout is unaltered.

More distressing was the unmistakable sight of the former owner, hovering around ominously like a naked alter ego of Santa Claus shorn of his trademark white beard. One of the most off-putting scenes seared in my memory was the sight of this unappealing, corpulent denizen being anally stimulated by a depressed, desperate-looking youth in front of a crowd of onlookers under bight lights; it was enough to keep me away from the CBC thereafter although there was a macabre mesmerizing effect of sheer repugnancy.

I would suggest to the new manager to add some sophisticated techniques to "marketing" of his business. Institute tariffs that vary by day/time and a sliding scale to attract a self-sustaining demographic ("good crowd"). Is it so difficult a concept to use? The airlines do it with differing tariffs by time of day/week/season; the restaurants do it with "early bird", "happy hour" and lunch prices; the tourist resorts do it with off-season pricing.

There could also be "prime demographic" recruiting. Liquor companies regularly give out free coupons to attractive people in nightclubs; banks offer free services to campus students.

Finally, we live in a multi-tasking, "connected world". Who wants to spend hours wandering around in a place full of strangers without the ability to do nothing else? Do we go to Starbucks primarily because the coffee is tasty? (Answer: No, it is largely because it's also an attractive, socializing place to hang out and to surf comfortably.) Have some Internet workstations, food & drink service...

Let me say something guys. Chuck is bringing you guys an amazing building, i know it takes some time but please understand that with patiance comes great reward.Just look how nice and great Cleveland turned out when he opened the one there and set the standard for bathouses around the entire country.

Chuck, if this is not happening, just tell us. Next time you open a club, announce it when it is actually complete. it has been two years now? and still NOTHING

I BOUGHT THE REST OF THE BLOCK INCLUDING THE HOUSE WHERE THEY FILMED "SOMETHING ABOUT MARY". IT WAS MY INTENTION TO OPEN A GUEST HOUSE BEHIND THE CACTUS GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE WATER....WITH BOAT DOCK. PAINTED AND REMODELED ALL THE HOUSES, INSTALLED A POOL, BUILT A TIKI BAR, LANDSCAPED THE PROPERTY (THANKS TO RANDY) AND WAS READY TO GO. THEN THE CITY/COUNTY RAISED AND RAISED AND RAISED THE TAXES UNTIL THEY WERE TEN TIMES MORE THAN WHEN I BOUGHT THE PROPERTY. MY ONLY OPTION WAS TO SELL! AND LUCKY I SOLD DURING THE BOOM.

I live in the North East and I cannot wait to visit MIAMI when Flex Baths opens. It's always top notch, and a great place for professionals to socialize and...

I would also pay more for a (Dressiing Gown) but I would like a thick terry robe and would pay for it, something similar to Ritz Carlton robes.
Great idea for us guys that are not twinks anymore and want to lounge and enjoy Flex Baths.

Hello, Chuck. I assume that you are a representative for Flex Baths. First of all, thank you for coming to Miami. There are a lot of good looking men here but the club scene is only for the young who can stay up all night. The public cruising scene has been extinguished by a decade long campaign by County and City governments, the most egregious form of repression being the Alice Wainwright and Simpson Parks, public parks that have been virtually "privatized" by tony neighbors who have paid "off duty" cops and huge 10ft fences put in (at taxpayers' expense).

Just a few suggestions for not making the same errors of the late CBC. It seems that young gays seems to "hook up" on the internet or late at night in clubs. That leaves the over 25's who work day jobs out on a limb. I used to go to the CBC but the increasingly decrepit state of the place, the lack of hygiene and, worst of all, the overwhelming presence of physically unappealing clients put me off. While I am not agist, it is not pleasant to see unclothed people in such a physical state of decline that they have walkers and oxygen tanks on a regular basis. After all, a major appeal of a "social club" is the physical attractiveness of the members there.

There should be some way of keeping the demographic mix similar to that of the general population. Ideas include: 1) The availability of dressing gowns (at a higher price) for those less than model-quality, or 2) deep discounts for younger age groups at "off peak", or 3) a loose quota system so that no one group predominates, or 4) even freebies given out at clubs for appealing individuals.

I also think that unsafe sexual practices should be discouraged or even banned (in common areas). There are too many irresponsible individuals to trust that they would be self-controlled.

Finally, while rare, some mentally unstable individuals can turn up in such areas. An extreme case was a sauna/baths in Paris where a married cop arrived and shot up clients. It turns out that he had been a previous client and a tortured soul. Could there be some way of keeping weapons out of the club? I know that a metal detector is very costly but some minimal precaution may be warranted in these crazy times. In a club in Buenos Aires, the cashier is accessed via remote controlled doors on either side so that only one client at a time is present. It's a bit like being in a bank. The only thing clients should be packing would not be made of metal.

I discovered the bathhouse in my early 20�??s �??after�?? I finished college and returned home to Miami. I am by nature shy... especially if I�??m attracted to a guy. After graduating I went thru a 4 yr sexual drought (no joke) dancing my ass of several nights a week, waiting for �??Mr. Right�?� to come along and sweep me off my feet�?� which of course would lead to one-on-one regular, passionate lovemaking (right, right). I finally found "release and relief" compliments of the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami baths.

I just turned 40; have perfected sex; and gotten over any sexual hang-ups I harbored... but simply walking up and speaking to a hot guy�?� this is still a challenge.

I made the 'choice' many yrs ago to not drink or 'party', so nighttime forays to the baths (bookstores, bushes, beaches) cut-thru-the-chase and sated the physical need; a real date and dinner however would sure be nice. Maybe a more socially-geared space�?� with �??sexual benefits�?? might be a good idea.

Thanks again for following up on my June 1st posting... I always learn from others�?? experiences.

CBC was a legend in Miami, and it's sad that after 44 years they had to close. But at the same time, the club was not what it used to be. Over the years it had fallen into disrepair with no visible improvements made. On one hand, you have CBC that was in poor condition but had a great clientele - then in contrast you have the Club Ft Lauderdale which is an amazing club, but I find the clientele to be ehhh.

I think a successful club needs to have both a great facility and great customers, and I think that Flex understands how to do that. I've been to Flex in Atlanta, New Orleans and LA and enjoyed all of them. Most recently I was in Atlanta and on the night that I was there they had glow in the dark wristbands so you could indicate your preference. Great idea! The facility was spotlessly clean, the staff friendly and it had a great steam, sauna and pool area. The LA club was great too, the only thing that let it down was the attitude of the front desk staff. But that was a while ago, and perhaps no longer an issue.

I've been to many baths in Europe, especially clubs like Chariots in London. I like how they have plenty of social areas, but I don't like how you can't rent your own room.

I think the concept of a bathhouse has changed over the years. Whereas it used to be a somewhat sleazy place to go and hook up, today's bathhouse is more of a recreational facility. I like clubs where you have a TV room to watch regular TV, a place to surf the internet or check email, a proper gym, licensed masseurs that will give real massages, dry sauna and eucalypus scented steam rooms, power showers (please have private shower stalls, sometimes I don't want people watching me while I clean my parts!), a cafe where you can sit and have a drink or snack (just please don't sell food that smells - nothing turns me off more than the smell of someone microwaving a burrito or eating cheetos!). I love the bathhouses that I've visited in Argentina (Nagasaki, HomoSapiens, AFull) where you have bars and cafes - not just sitting areas with vending machines but people who will actually serve you drinks and snacks. Give us flip-flops with our towels and beds with pillows. Keep the decor masculine, use stainless steel and rubber materials, and please - no pastel color schemes. Make it a place that the locals will keep coming back to, as well as the tourists.

With Flex Miami, I hope that it will incorporate the best elements of all the other clubs. Chuck - your description of the Cleveland facility sounds great, how will Flex Miami compare with that in terms of its amenities? (theatres, bars, restauarant, number of rooms, steam rooms, sauna etc). What do you have planned for us?!

Bummer, if CBC has closed its doors. The end of an era; and while some won't remember it, this bath held the ground in the early struggle for local (Miami) gay rights in the 70's. In any case, and I ask this as a question; has the bathhouse outlived its usefulness in a time of greater acceptance of GLBT people... the marriage issue aside for the moment. Again, this is not a 'sex-negative' question, nor an anti-bath business one, just asking about the past roll of the baths and their roll/function in today's world.

Passed by CBC Miami today. Sign on the door that they are closed, out of business. Will reopen is about a week as Club Aqua under new ownership. I had heard they were planning some renovations, wasn't expecting this. Had to drive up to Ft. Lauderdale instead. Hurry up and open Flex - I love your Atlanta club, hope the Miami one will be as good if not better!

Hi, I am eagerly looking forward to the opening of Flex in Miami, as I am sure it will be fantastic - however, the past couple of times I have driven by the property, all I see are some broken windows and junk cars in the parking lot. There does not seem to be any activity going on as far as renovations or improvements. The gates are closed up and nobody appears to be on site. Are you actively working on the property or is it on hold?

Note from this Miami Native on Club location. About 13 years back, a brave soldier in the bathhouse industry set up a bath right on Alton Rd and 15th Street... It didn't last a year. The locals were either:

(1)Too intimidated to walk into the place (the entrance faced Alton Rd and there was NO hiding ??where?? you were going or ??what?? you were looking to do)
(2)Preferred rutting in Flamingo Park... even when raining or cold out (and the park was free and 'dangerous?? of course)
(3)Guys would rather drive the 30 miles north to the old Club Ft Lauderdale.

In short, owning one's horniness publically by being seen entering a bathhouse on the Beach was just too-close-to-home... for comfort.

Despite its 'gay-friendliness', SoBe still has its issues. With access from 1-95/SR 112, Midtown would make a centralized location. From what I've seen of the residence in the Midtown-town center... the fellas "over" the 'stand and model... I'm so young, beautiful and fit to speak to you' crowd on South Beach, who have matured and grown comfortable with themselves as sexual beings, and desire not to move to Wilton Manors in Broward County but welcome an aspect of 'community' closer to Miami, ARE the types moving into this Midtown neighborhood.

you just don't get it do you? an easy check of miami-dade county's public records website will reveal exact location and price paid for flex miami.

the only thing you might be able to buy on miami beach (even in this economy) in the 2-3 million dollar range is a modest luxury condo.

do you think the city of miami beach would issue a permit for a bathhouse in 2009???

even at the height of the gay 90's there was a short-lived bathhouse-like club on alton road and 15th where nuconcept furniture stands today.

calling flex miami's location "midtown" is a bit disingenuos on their part. "midtown" is nothing more than a marketing term, just like "south beach" or "sobe". even if one were to give them a little slack and say their are talking about the geographical area and not the mammoth shop/live complex, it's quiet a stretch to say they are located in "midtown".

flex miami's location at nw 7th ave/35th street is probably closer to "allapatha", a working poor miami neighborhood with a certain rate of crime. even though chuck stated they purchased the property next door for parking and pool, i still feel a little apprehensive about not being enough secure parking.

still i'm very optimistic about flex miami. that 30 minute drive to the club-fort lauderdale gets old. the other club miami in miami is so rundown it's not even on the radar as far as i'm concerned. i think if they spend money doing a total demolition/rehab of the building they should have many local, domestic and international visitors. if they just do band aid job, it will be no better than club miami or the clubhouse II in fort lauderdale.

Chuck, why did you choose midtown, instead of south beach? are you sure you are going to get that boys to go ALL the way out of town for the baths? You might as well be in Fort Lauderdale. Horrible location.

I hate the CLUB Fort Lauderdale that the gym is by the reception. kind of uncomfortable to workout with a door opening to the street. Please make it a private area and away.

Also, TRY TO HAVE A GREAT GYM, Where is becomes the gay gym of choice for Miami. Have gym rates or gym passes for 2 hours just to workout.

Chuck; per your Jan 1st response in the comments section, the Miami venue was still in 'demo/repair phase'. Are you open to input for a local? Would love to contribute to getting things off the ground down south

It is really sad, CBC Miami is a very run-down place now. I remember it back in 1988 as a lively, clean and fun place. It was bigger, too, with a nature path in back off the patio area. There was a hair salon there, too and a restaurant in what is now the check-in house. A little bad management goes a long way. I've been to the new Flex in Cleveland and it is very nice, though I hope it is gaining attendance to support such a lavish space. It went through some delays in opening so I imagine Miami will see similar bumps in the road.

In response to the previous comment about going to the Club Body Center , let me advise you that this is the worst Club I have ever expperience in my entire life.

Phoenix flex has been more fun than I could have imagined! Since I live in a small town on the colorado river area, I rarely get to go. A great thing about the flex clubs are the GYMS. I personally really go to pump iron in my jockstrap/thong. Can't stand mainstream gay gyms anymore too much fish.

Is the gym in Miami going to be a full service gym? Cause Miami is the mecca for body models, so it should have a good gym.

How about having daily gym rates? the slow times to pump iron?

When is the club to open? I was told it would open this year, and got a membership in LA for my visit.

The male gay community is waiting for the Grand Opening of the Flex MIAMI.

It is too bad the Miami location won't be open in this year. I will be in Miami for Festival 2008, the international choral music festival for the Gay and Lesbian association of choruses. There will be 5,000 additional GLBT folks in town July 12-20, it would have been great to visit the new Miami location.

One of the folks working the counter at the Cleveland location led me to believe the Miami location would be open by July 1st this year. Please let them know that they information they have there was wrong. I had purchased a membership during my time in Cleveland anticipating I could use it in Miami.

I don't mind having the membership, but communication should be better with the folks in Cleveland and other locations.
